• For bus, coach & limo owners who know every driver by name

You May Need Fewer Buses and Limos Than You Think to Qualify for Better, Cheaper Insurance

The secret is captive insurance, where safe operators keep the profit an insurer would normally pocket. Some programs start at around $100,000 in combined annual premiums, and many screen at $250,000, counting commercial auto, general liability, and workers' comp together. Add up yours below and see where your fleet already stands.

“Most owners complain about insurance, yet change nothing. Not because they don't want to, but because of inertia, disbelief, and not realizing how easy it really is. Rydflow wants you to succeed, because when you succeed, we do too. And the way there is safety, because safety shows up in your insurance, your fuel, and everything else.”

NEW TO CAPTIVE INSURANCE? HERE IT IS IN PLAIN ENGLISH

The Big Difference: A Captive Keeps the Profit

Think of it like eating at a restaurant versus cooking at home.

TRADITIONAL INSURANCE

Eating at a Restaurant

Your bill covers the food, plus the rent, the staff, the marketing, and the owner's profit. If you barely touch your plate, you still pay full price, and the restaurant keeps the difference.

Food (your claims)OverheadTheir profit

CAPTIVE INSURANCE

Cooking at Home

You pay for the groceries and share a professional chef with your neighbors. Whatever isn't eaten stays in your kitchen, and it can come back to you.

Groceries (your claims)Shared chefStays with you

In insurance terms: a captive is a members-only group of operators who insure part of their own risk together.

How Your Kitchen Is Protected

Home insuranceLarge lossesIf the whole kitchen catches fire, you're not paying for it alone, and neither are your neighbors. Reinsurance covers the big, rare disasters.
The neighborhood pantryShared layerEvery family chips in. If one runs short one month, the pantry covers it. Captive members pool part of their risk the same way.
Your own grocery billYour retained layerCook carefully, waste less, and you keep the savings. Fewer accidents and better safety mean more money stays with you.

With traditional insurance, someone else runs the whole kitchen and keeps what's left over. In a captive, you're still protected from disasters, you share the everyday risks with other good operators, and the better you run your own kitchen, the more you can benefit.

How Captive Insurance Works

A group captive, the most common form of captive insurance for mid-size businesses, lets qualifying businesses join a shared insurance and risk-financing structure. Instead of handing virtually all risk to a traditional carrier, members retain and share a defined portion of it, with reinsurance or excess coverage protecting against larger losses.

When the group performs well, members may benefit from favorable underwriting results, including potential surplus distributions. When losses are unfavorable, members share those consequences according to the program's structure.

A captive isn't just a discount. It's a chance to take more control of your risk, and share in the rewards of managing it well.

A STORY BUILT ON REAL 2026 RENEWALS

Meet Maria. Two Coaches and a Van.

Maria runs a family charter company in the Northeast. Her drivers are like family, and every year her renewal still lands on her desk with a bigger number.

The renewal

Her commercial auto renewal: $98,931 for two motorcoaches and one passenger van. $80,287 of that is liability alone, about $32,000 per coach.

The surprise

She adds her general liability and workers' comp on top and realizes she's already past the $100,000 mark where some captive programs begin. With just three vehicles.

The proof

She starts tracking driver behavior and coaching her team, so underwriters can see what she's always known: her fleet is a good risk.

The payoff

Instead of paying for the industry's worst drivers, her premium starts working for her, and in good years, money can come back to her business.

The real numbers behind the story

3-vehicle fleet, 2026–27 auto renewal$98,9312 motorcoaches + 1 van · $5M liability limit
Single motorcoach, 2026–27 renewal quote$42,213$40,361 auto + $1,852 general liability
Liability cost per coach$32K–$38.5Kbefore physical damage, GL, or workers' comp

Maria's story is based on actual 2026 renewal documents from charter operators. Names and identifying details are changed for privacy.

Where Your Insurance Dollar Goes

With traditional insurance, your premium pays for expected claims plus the insurer's overhead, broker commissions, reinsurance, and the insurer's profit and risk margin. In a captive, members cover those same claims, but much of the overhead shrinks and the profit margin stays with the group instead of leaving it.

Example: the five-bus operator, $254,805 a year in combined premiums.

Traditional insurance$254,805
Captive insurance$170,719 + potential return
$84,086
could stay in the captive in an average claims year instead of going to an insurer's margin and overhead. When the group performs well, that money can come back to members over time.

Illustrative only, using a simplified industry-style breakdown: claims 50%, administration 10% (5% in the captive), broker and distribution 8% (2%), reinsurance 10%, insurer profit and risk margin 22%. Real group captives also involve fronting fees, captive management costs, collateral or capital contributions, and taxes, and member returns typically arrive over several years as claims settle. Enter your own premiums in the calculator above to update these numbers.

How a Strong Safety Record Pays Off

Say that same operator's expected claims are $127,403 for the year. Here's how the year can play out in a captive.

GOOD YEAR

Fewer Claims Than Expected

+$57,403

Claims come in around $70,000. The unused money stays in the captive and can be returned to members. With traditional insurance, the insurer keeps it.

EXPECTED YEAR

Claims as Planned

$0 surprise

Claims match the forecast. The claims fund covers them, and the group still keeps the lower overhead and margin shown above.

TOUGHER YEAR

Protected by the Group

Shared & reinsured

If claims run higher, the cost is spread across members within the program's limits, and reinsurance protects against large losses.

Illustrative scenarios. How results are shared depends on each program's structure.

Types of Captives, and Which Fit a Fleet

Group captiveOwned by several unrelated companies that pool and share risk.
Most common fit for fleets
Association captiveOwned by members of an industry or trade association.
Good fit via industry groups
Rent-a-captive / cell captiveUse a cell inside an existing captive without forming your own company.
Possible entry point
Single-parent captiveOwned by one company to insure its own risks. Needs significant capital and scale.
Usually large fleets only

Every captive needs adequate capital, licensing, governance, actuarial support, and regulatory compliance. Joining an existing group program spreads those costs across members.

Six Questions to Ask Yourself

Premium volume is only the starting point. Financial strength, loss history, capital requirements, and a captive's appetite for passenger transportation risk all matter too.

Answer these honestly. If most are yes, exploring captive insurance may be worthwhile.

Preliminary screening questions only, not universal underwriting requirements or a guarantee of acceptance.

Answer the questions to see your score.

The Catch: Can You Prove You're a Good Risk?

Every operator believes their drivers are good and their maintenance is responsible. Underwriters need evidence: how often drivers speed, whether harsh braking keeps recurring, whether preventable incidents get addressed, and whether safety performance is improving over time. A good record backed by measurable data is far more persuasive.

That's why Rydflow partners with Linxup, a U.S.-based telematics provider offering GPS tracking, fleet monitoring, and driver-behavior reporting. Depending on configuration, it helps you track:

Speeding and driver behaviorSpot speeding, harsh braking, and aggressive acceleration before they lead to accidents.
Location and utilizationSee where vehicles operate and how they're used.
MaintenanceSchedule preventive work and cut avoidable downtime.
Driver accountabilityCoach with objective data and document improvement.
Operational efficiencyFind idling, underused vehicles, and other waste.
